Green Mountain Farms Cream Cheese & Greek Yogurt
Greek yogurt meets bagels with double the protein, live cultures.

While shopping at a Fresh Market store in Normal, Ill., I recently encountered Greek Cream Cheese, a line of cream cheese products formulated with Greek-style yogurt.

GreenMountainFarmsWith the popularity of Greek yogurt my skeptic alarm went off initially, but right on the front panel of the container I found that the plain spread contains twice the protein and half the fat of standard soft cream cheese, with live and active cultures thrown in. At the end of the day, the nutrition profile is what draws consumers to Greek yogurt, so I think I can call this authentic.

Made by Franklin Foods Inc., Delray Beach, Fla., the line is marketed under the company's Green Mountain Farms brand. The spread follows the initial introduction in September 2012 of a brick form. The latest extension offers flavors including Cucumber Garlic, Roasted Red Pepper, and Sundried Tomato. Fruit flavors are also in the pipeline. The plain spread tasted just like other low-fat cream cheeses but with those nutritional bonuses associated with Greek yogurt. It's available at major retailers in 6.5- 8 oz. containers for $3.99-4.59.

Greek outside the box

The Greek yogurt influence is beginning to show up in other cultured dairy products as well. Processors are using it as an ingredient in butter, smoothies, dips, cream cheeses and of course, freezing it. Greek yogurt is everywhere.

This summer, Alpharetta, Ga.-based Tryst Gourmet LLC, owner of Eat Well Enjoy Life, makers of non-chick pea hummus, created a hummus containing Greek yogurt. Franklin Foods, Enosburg Falls, Vt., owners of Greek Mountain Farms, launched a Greek yogurt cream cheese said to contain twice the protein and half the fat of regular cream cheese, plus live and active cultures.  Along with Yoplait’s other introductions, it also added frozen smoothies with Greek yogurt to its line.

Joy Bauer of the TODAY Show's Greek Cream Cheese Review

Posted on October 17, 2012

Joy Bauer on Whosay -- October 17, 2012: "Healthy Food Find! I am loving this Greek Cream cheese spread from Green Mountain Farms. It has 1/2 the fat of regular cream cheese, 2x the protein, plus a dose of live and active cultures. The whipped version delivers the best calorie bargain -- and is delicious to spread on a toasted whole-wheat sandwich thin!" Click here for Joy's Whosay review.

FRANKLIN FOODS LAUNCHES INDUSTRY’S FIRST GREEK CREAM CHEESE

Greek Cream Cheese Delivers 2x More Protein & 1/2 the Fat the of regular cream cheese, plus Live & Active Cultures

Delray Beach, FL. – September 24, 2012 – Franklin Foods, the fastest growing cream cheese producer in the World announced today the launch of the industry’s first Greek Cream Cheese. Made with a combination of premium cream cheese and Greek Yogurt, Green Mountain Farms Greek Cream Cheese is produced with farm fresh milk and cream in Enosburg Falls, Vermont and satisfies consumer demand for foods that provide just the right balance of good nutrition and great taste. Greek Cream Cheese delivers twice the protein and fifty percent less fat than regular cream cheese, and contains live and active cultures. Green Mountain Farms Greek Cream Cheese will be available this fall at over 2000 retailers in the Northeast, mid-west and mid-Atlantic regions with expanded distribution Planned in 2013.

Green Mountain Farms Greek Cream Cheese offers nutritional balance and great taste. As more consumers have discovered the health benefits and delicious taste of Greek Yogurt, Franklin Food’s has taken this to the cream cheese market. Greek Cream Cheese is a rich, full-flavored decadent cream cheese and can be used in place of traditional cream cheese. A perfect choice for the upcoming busy holiday baking season, Franklin Food’s Greek Cream Cheese 8oz. Bar is ideal for baking and cooking and can be used in any recipe calling for cream cheese. Franklin Food’s Greek Cream Cheese is also available in convenient 8oz. and 12oz. soft tubs, 8 oz. whipped tubs. Franklin Food’s patented formulation allows for easy spreading on bagels, crackers, fruits and vegetables for quick and easy spreading.

“Our experience and passion is crafting great cream cheese and we want to share this with people that desire delicious foods. We want people to join us and usher in a whole new era of cream cheese that better matches the way we all strive to eat and maintain healthier eating goals”, said Rocco Cardinale, Director of Marketing.

Today’s cream cheese category is limited in both selection and brands. The goal of Franklin Food’s patent-approved formula is to raise the bar in the retail cream cheese category with enhanced cream cheese products—enhanced with better flavor, functionality and nutrition.

“Virtually every category in the supermarket has evolved to include products with better-for-you nutritional benefits. Whether its snacks, yogurt, or bread they have added nutritional benefits to their products and have been successful. Yet, cream cheese remains steadfast in offering regular, Neufchatel and fat-free products. It’s simple, traditional cream cheese isn’t offering consumers the benefits they are seeking. Greek Cream Cheese is the product that delivers and will be the catalyst to get the category growing again,” said, Jon Gutknecht, CEO.

Available in four sizes: 8 oz. Bar for baking and cooking, 8oz. Soft, 12 oz. Soft, and 8oz. Whipped for spreading. Located in the dairy case cream cheese section. SRP: $2.29 - $3.29. For more information visit www.eatgreekcreamcheese.com.
